How to check quotations from the Bible.
There are a number of translations, so the wording may vary but not the meaning. I use the New King James Version (the Authorised Version in modern English), otherwise The New International Version, The Good News Bible and The Living Bible are recommended.
The Bible contains over sixty pieces of writing, you will find their names and page numbers at the beginning of the Bible.
1 John means The First Letter (Epistle) of John,
John is The Gospel of John, a biography of Jesus.
Acts: Acts of the Apostles, the story of the early Church.
Following the name is a reference, such as 10:4 which means chapter 10 verse 4. Each chapter is broken into smaller numbered parts to allow you to find things more easily.
